brewed thoughts, storms, and coffee beans

IT’S ALMOST SUMMER. coffee...explanation later our table my interest in school Clearly, I'm ready. I’m ready to be in showers that are clean. Showers where I’m not cupping water and trying to rinse unknown hairs or boogers off the shower walls. I’m ready to be warm and get really good at bowling with my nanny boys. And eat way too much Red Mango. I’m ready for swimsuits and late nights and cookouts. I’m ready to wake up on a Sunday morning and see my dad reading the newspaper in his boxers. I’m ready for sass fights with my mom. I’m ready for my brothers to yell at me from the bathroom that they need more toilet paper, and to bring the plunger. I almost didn’t live at home this summer. But something brought me back. Maybe it’s the fact that my mom has this obsession with making blueberry muffins. Maybe it’s the fact that this is the last “kid” summer that will end with school supply shopping and back-to-school clothes. Maybe it’s tha...

Disclaimer: this blog is dedicated to Asha, my dear friend and one of my three (okay, maybe four) dedicated readers. She called me up and asked me why I haven't blogged in awhile. Not only did I promise her a blog this weekend, I also promised to write it in her honor. So those who don't know Asha, she's pretty cool. But sorry men, she's taken. With that being said. I have been trying to write something funny and/or lighthearted and/or an inclusion of my life in the past month that I haven’t blogged about—Easter, formal, my recent desire to have my nails painted that hasn’t been present since I owned a Lisa Frank backpack—but really all I can think about is Colossians…where my heart has been sitting recently. I also still keep thinking about this: But that’s a different story, maybe for a different time. I will just say this: if you come to a formal that I plan, you ARE at risk of being injured. The facts speak for themselves. Anyways, back to Colossians....

Rushmore & Write-ups

I’m sitting here wearing a dress because I'm too hot to wear anything else. And I made extra sure that this dress was long enough and didn’t show any of my cleavage. Because apparently even secretaries can get in trouble for skirts that dare to be shorter than three inches above the knee. Yes, ladies and gentlemen. I was written up. Handed the pink slip in choir and told that girls look up to me and that dresses four inches above the knee put me embarrassingly below reproach. I knew I wouldn’t be able to make it a whole year without a secretarial scandal, though I have to admit I was hoping it’d be a bit juicier than this dry piece of paper that is now pinned to my wall by my mirror, haunting my daily wardrobe choices with its condescendingly pink tint. Here it is. On a brighter note, the writer-upper told me she loves me on the violation report, mmm. Thank God she still loves me, I was worried about that. But then I was rushed off to Mount Rushmore with flamboyant boys...
Lately I have been laughing a lot, and nothing especially funny has occurred. Lately I have also been biting the right side of my bottom lip furiously, and I don’t think I ever used to bite my bottom lip as a comfort mechanism, but here I am. Sitting on my bed. My teeth clenched around that bottom lip like they’re holding on for dear life. A long lost friend is coming in a few minutes and I’ve missed her. And this week we will stay up too late talking about silly things and old memories, and she will ask me the question. And I will go through the pros and cons of giving her an honest answer… biting my lip as I decide. I’ve begun to not give a rat’s behind about tact and mystery anymore. It is taking everything in me (and a good chunk out of my bottom lip) to not go crazy and explain to the world why I keep laughing though nothing’s funny. Why I give ambiguous answers to their questions, and why my blogs are especially fuzzy and non-specific. And why I don’t want t...
I woke up at 6:45 am with the sun pouring in, like, “Haha Whitney! You’re not happy but I am! It’s so great to be the sun! You don’t have to worry about getting hurt or worrying or being sad about anything! I just shine, all the time! It’s so great! Too bad for youuuu!” I usually stay in bed for a good 15 minutes after my roommate’s radio wakes me up, just praying. I love starting my day like that. But today the sun kept taunting me and all I could say were a few ums and really big sighs, trusting that He, the Author of all languages, is fluent in my primitive meltdown reversion tongue. I was going to make a Tower of Babel joke but everyone expects that of a Christian college girl, and I hate just being what everyone expects. I’m planning my lesson for youth group on Wednesday and I’m talking about the tongue and the importance of our words, struck by the irony that I can’t even bring myself to say much right now. I love words and right now none are quite coming to mind....
It’s Leap Day. I was excited for today. I love odd, random, extra things. I woke up energized and determined and ready. I woke up and wrote in my journal, “God, I want today to be purposeful and intentional. It’s Leap Day! This date only happens once every four years, let’s make it count. Let’s make it good.” So I leaped out of bed (get it) and was READY for my day. So ready that I had my favorite breakfast and even worked out and showered before my day started. Today is going to rock! … So, I can’t quite put my finger on it. Maybe it’s the fact that my poor water bottle is still MIA, or that I had to purchase my 3 rd key card of the semester because mine was lost, that I left my purse in my room and had no chapstick all day, or that after I purchased my new key card, I was texted by the mom I babysit for, saying she found it. Or maybe it was just that it was so windy. And wind makes me want to blow up an orphanage. I don’t know WHAT it was. But today was off. Like, ...

I’m going to start off by saying I have no idea where this is going to end up. I have been jumbling around in Florida and wished I could write a blog for every warm day I was there. But meetings kept us busy all day and the swimming pool was calling our names at night and there was just no time to be alone. Plus I didn’t bring my laptop, and I really didn’t want to write out a heartfelt blog on my iPhone. Sorry, Siri. For those of you who don’t know, I was at a leadership conference in Orlando. And that was basically all the information I received beforehand. But I love spontaneity and the unexpected, so I somehow packed my four days into two carry-ons and set my alarm for 5:35 am. I was ready for something, and I figured I’d come back with helpful tools and hints to lead the campus that I love. I was expecting good leadership advice and some Bible verses on great leaders. I expected to come back with strategy and a smile on my tanned face. I expected this And this ...
